I am a full-time artist living and painting in Georgetown, Maine. My oil and pastel paintings are primarily seascapes and landscapes that convey the many moods of New England--its rocky shores, mountains, marshes, and people.
My art career started early at the age of eight when I began weekly private lessons in charcoal drawing and oil painting. I continued studying with a number of instructors and minored in Studio Art at the University of Maryland, focusing on oil painting and sculpture. While working subsequently in Boston, I studied painting at the Harvard Extension School.
After working many years in a related communication field, I committed to a career as an artist and moved to Maine in 2007. I love the drama of the coast and find inspiration whenever I look out at the ocean. Its rhythms and energy say much to me about life, and this has become a central theme in my work.
I have been painting full-time since 2007, both "en plein air" and in my studio daily. In 2008, I partnered with four other artists to found the Old Post Office Gallery in Georgetown to support and promote the work of local artists. My work has also been juried into the Sebascodegan Gallery on Orr's Island, Maine, where I am now a permanent member.
My paintings are held in many private collections in several countries. People who have purchased my work remark on its color, energy and vitality. Said one fan recently, "When I look at your work, I can actually smell the salt water."
I am a Juried Associate Member of the Oil Painters of America and the Pastel Society of America. My other professional associations include the Pastel Painters of Maine, Kennebec Art Club, Five Rivers Arts Alliance, and Merrymeeting Art Association. Over the past two years, my work has appeared in juried exhibitions in Maine at the Saco Museum, Blue Marble Gallery, Harlow Gallery, Maine Art Gallery, Chocolate Church Gallery, River Tree Arts, and River Arts. In addition, I have had solo shows at the Time Gallery in Portland, FAME in Augusta, the Georgetown Town Hall gallery, Miles Hospital gallery in Damariscotta, and the Just Framing gallery in Bath, among others.
When I paint, I feel connected to the natural world. In my oils and pastels, I try to convey the drama and energy I feel in nature, in a particular place, in a particular moment--the joy of being, the sparkle of light on water, the sweep of the surf, and the color and texture of coast and country. When people look at my work, I want it to strike a chord--surface a positive memory or emotion and resonate with or reinforce something good in their lives.
